A labour of love for founders Lorena Castillo and Bernie Mittelstaedt, Nitun is one of the few authentic eco lodges in the area. Blessed with remarkable natural resources and a spirit of infectious camaraderie, it's not surprising that our guests fall in love with Nitun too.
In 2013, after years of hard work, Nitun was granted official "private reserve" status by CONAP (Consejo Nacional de Areas Protegidas), a government agency responsible for the conservation, rehabilitation, and protection of Guatemala’s natural resources. Nitun Private Reserve boasts a lush, clean and bountiful forest, pristine lake and a diverse array of flora and fauna. This is due to our conservation practices, and the invaluable support of our guests.
In 1992 Lorena Castillo left Guatemala City for a weekend break in the, then relatively unknown, Petén region. It was love at first sight. Lore never returned to her old life in Guatemala City. Instead, she decided to dedicate her life to the preservation of the land that had stolen her heart. Years of dedicated hard-work and effort led to the creation of the Nitun Private Reserve and Eco Lodge. Sharing the magic of Petén and Nitun with guests drives us to make every stay unforgettable.
It's never been easier to hop off the beaten path! Nitun Eco Reserve can be reached in 20 minutes by car from the nearby town of Flores or a short sail across the charming Lake Petén Itza. The well-connected Mundo Maya International Airport at Flores makes getting to Nitun Eco Lodge quick and convenient from both Guatemala City and Belize.
Ecological, social and economic sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Nitun Eco Lodge. Sustaining the areas remarkable biodiversity in the face of increasing deforestation, poaching and aggressive agriculture was the motivation for establishing Nitun Private Reserve and it drives everything we do. At Nitun Eco Lodge, ecotourism is a way of life, not a buzzword.
Nothing makes us happier than exceeding our customers' expectations and giving them the experience of a lifetime. We're very proud and grateful that our guests have rated us 5 stars on Tripadvisor.
